American Legion Park

American Legion Park (ALP) is Rosebud’s largest park, with over 23 acres. The park features a paved walking trail and outdoor fitness area for ages 13 and over. ALP is open and visited by bridge enthusiasts to view the historic Hope Memorial Bridge and Big Elm Creek Bridge.

The Hope Memorial Bridge is a historic bowstring pony truss bridge made in 1867 by King Iron Bridge Company of Cleveland, Ohio, from Carnegie Steel. The bridge was placed in ALP in 1963 and serves as a pedestrian bridge for the park.

American Legion Park is home to the Big Elm Creek Bridge. The King Iron Bridge Company constructed this bridge at CR 179 over Big Elm Creek in 1884. It is a single-span bowstring truss bridge with a riveted tubular-arch top chord in a configuration typical of the Company’s work. This bridge is significant because, before being relocated to the ALP in 2020, it was one of only two remaining bowstring truss bridges in vehicular service. It is also significant for its use of both wrought iron and cast iron materials. Plans are in progress to repair the bridge for safe pedestrian use.

A creative play area in American Legion Park is forthcoming. This area will be ideal for kids ages 2 to 12 and feature playground components designed to encourage creative play, help develop fine motor skills, and improve coordination.
